How Do You Clear Coat Over Rust?
Preserving the unique, aged look of rusted metal has become a popular trend in the automotive, industrial, and artistic worlds. But if you want to keep that look without letting corrosion get out of control, applying a clear coat over rust is the answer. In this article, we’ll explore what rust patina is, why people preserve it, and how to properly protect rust patina with clear coat using KBS Coatings DiamondFinish Clear and MAXX Clear.
What Is Rust Patina?
Rust patina is the natural oxidized layer that forms on the surface of metal, especially steel or iron, when exposed to moisture and oxygen over time. Unlike flaky, damaging rust that eats away at metal, a patina often forms a relatively stable layer. For many, this weathered look adds character, depth, and history to a surface.
Rust patina is valued in classic cars, motorcycles, sculptures, architecture, and furniture. The visual texture it creates can’t be replicated with paint, which is why rust patina preservation is becoming a go-to strategy for many restorers and builders.

Why Do People Want to Preserve Rust Patina?
People choose to preserve rust patina because of its raw, industrial beauty. Rather than sand that away, many prefer to seal and protect it.
Here’s why enthusiasts and pros aim to protect rusted metal look:
- Aesthetic appeal: Rust patina offers a rugged, unique visual finish.
- Cost-effective: Keeping original materials avoids the cost of refinishing or replacement.
- Cultural value: In classic vehicles or historic structures, the patina may be part of the item's provenance.
But if left unprotected, that same patina can eventually degrade into damaging rust. That’s where a clear coat over rust patina comes in.
How Do You Apply Clear Coat Over Rust Patina?
To preserve rust finish with clear coat, you need to follow a few critical steps to ensure proper adhesion, durability, and visual appeal.
Prepare the Rust Patina for Clear Coat
Before you seal rusted metal with clear coat, the surface must be dry and free of grease, loose rust, and contaminants.
- Start by removing flaky or powdery rust using a wire brush or 600 grit (or finer) sandpaper. You can also use a red Scotch-Brite pad for this purpose. Sand lightly to provide a stable surface, but don’t be too aggressive, as excessive sanding can remove the patina you want to keep.
- Next, clean the surface of dirt, grease and contaminants that can stand in the way of the clear coat bonding. KBS Klean is perfect for this purpose as it won’t leave residue that could hurt clear coat adhesion, like solvent-based cleaners can.

- Mix KBS Klean with warm water, and scrub the metal surface with a sponge, scrub pad or scrub brush. Pay attention to corners and crevices.
- Scrub the metal surface with a sponge, scrub pad or scrub brush. Pay attention to corners and crevices.
- Rinse the surface thoroughly with water to remove any leftover cleaner, and dry thoroughly. Take care no lint collects on the rough surface if using a cloth. Of note, compressed air works well for drying.

Tips for Applying DiamondFinish Clear 1K Aerosol to Rust Patina
After proper surface preparation DiamondFinish Clear 1K Aerosol can be applied.
- For best results, apply when surface and air temperature are between 50-85F.
- Apply only in moderate to dry atmospheric conditions (70% humidity or lower).
- Shake the can for at least one minute after the mixing ball has started to rattle.
- Hold the can 8 to 12 inches from the surface and apply in light and even overlapping strokes. For proper curing it’s important to apply multiple thin coats, rather than fewer thick coats.
- Two thin covering coats typically provide proper coverage, however, additional light and even coats can be applied as needed.
- Re-coating can be done once the first or consecutive coat is dry-to-touch. For best results, always apply coats consecutively within 15 minutes of each coat curing or after 48 hours.
- Full cure is usually achieved within 48 hours.

Tips for Applying DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear to Rust Patina
Note, Since the moisture cured formulations of DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear cure faster in moist conditions, special care is needed. Avoid applying DiamondFinish Clear in wet or high-humidity environments to prevent rapid curing.
General Guidelines for Brushing, Rolling and Spraying DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear
- For best results, apply in temperatures between 50–82°F and only in moderate to dry conditions. Avoid application during rain, high heat, or high humidity.
- Before each use, stir DiamondFinish Clear thoroughly—but gently—using a paint paddle, making sure to lift and mix from the bottom of the can to the top.
- When using KBS MAXX Clear, begin by thoroughly mixing KBS MAXX Clear Base. It’s recommended to use a KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer, or a similar mechanical mixing blade attached to a variable speed drill for efficient mixing. Once the KBS MAXX Clear Base has been mixed well and reaches a smooth, consistent texture, carefully measure 3 parts of the mixed base into a clean mixing cup or container. Next, add 1 part of MAXX Activator. Be sure to mix the two components thoroughly.
- Apply a minimum of three thin, even coats.
- For proper curing, apply multiple thin coats instead of fewer, thicker ones. Avoid puddling and pooling.
- When using a brush or roller, apply and move on immediately instead of repeatedly brushing. This prevents solvents from being forced out, ensuring proper flow and avoiding premature curing and visible brush marks.
- Re-coating can be done once the previous coat is dry to the touch and no longer leaves a fingerprint—usually within 2–4 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. For best results, apply additional coats within 8 hours of the previous coat curing.
- Allow DiamondFinish Clear to dry completely. Under normal conditions, the work piece can be handled after 1 day, with full cure achieved in at least 7 days. Avoid rain, high humidity, and abrasion during this curing period.
When Brushing
- Thinning is usually unnecessary when brushing, but if needed to improve flow out, it can be thinned by about 10% using KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene only.
- Optional Thinning: While KBS MAXX Clear Base and MAXX Activator are pre-thinned and ready to use for brushing, rolling, or spraying, you may choose to thin the mixture further.

When Rolling
- Use a low nap roller cover, like a mohair roller.
- When rolling, DiamondFinish Clear can be thinned by approximately 10-20% with KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene to improve flow.
When Spraying with Equipment
- Always wear an air supplied respirator or NIOSH/MSHA approved organic vapor particulate respirator and eye protection.
- When spraying, thin DiamondFinish Clear with KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene only. 10%-15% is typically adequate but can be thinned up to 30%.
More information on spraying DiamondFinish Clear can be found in our Spraying Guidelines.
