How To Properly Open a Paint Can Preventing a Stuck Lid and How To Preserve Paint In The Can

How To Properly Open a Paint Can, Prevent a Stuck Lid, and Preserve Paint in the Can

Because most of our paint is shipped, there is a chance that paint can work its way between the can and the lid — making it harder to open than a standard latex paint. The main resin in most KBS Coatings paints is an adhesive, which is what makes our coatings perform so well. Opening the can correctly protects the lid's compression seal so you can reseal it properly every time.

Do Not Use a Flat-Head Screwdriver

Flat-head screwdrivers warp the lid as you pry, which can destroy the compression seal and make the lid impossible to reseal. Always use a proper paint can opener with a curved or "L"-shaped end.

Step-by-Step: How to Open the Can

Step 1 — Remove the Plastic Ring

If your paint can lid has a plastic ring on it, remove it before attempting to open the can.

Step 2 — Use a Paint Can Opener

Use a paint can opener with a curved or "L"-shaped end. Do not use a flat-head screwdriver.

Step 3 — Work Around the Lid Gradually

Gently lift (do not pry) the lid at one point, then rotate the can 10 degrees and lift gently again. Continue around the entire can. Then repeat the process, lifting a little more each pass, until the lid releases. Never pry in one spot only — this warps the lid and ruins the compression seal.

Pro Tip: Closing the Can

Use the same gradual approach when resealing — press the lid down evenly around the perimeter rather than hammering one spot. A proper seal prevents skinning and extends shelf life significantly.

The video below walks through the proper technique for opening and closing a KBS Coatings paint can, and also demonstrates how to use KBS Paint Saver to preserve what's left in the can.

Preserve Leftover Paint with KBS Paint Saver

KBS Paint Saver is a proven coating preserver designed for long-term storage of leftover paints in the original can. It prevents skinning so you can use the entire can, reducing waste and saving money. It works with paints, coatings, and clear coats, is environmentally safe, and is extremely easy to use.

Why KBS Paint Saver Works

When you reseal a can, the air space above the paint causes oxidation and skinning. KBS Paint Saver displaces that air, creating a protective barrier directly on the surface of the coating — keeping it fresh until your next use.
