How To Properly Open a DiamondFinish Clear Can and How To Preserve Clear Coat In The Can

Because most of our clear coat ships to you in a sealed can, some DiamondFinish Clear can work its way into the seam between the can and the lid. That can make the lid harder to pry off than a standard latex paint can. KBS Coatings paints and clear coats provide much stronger adhesion than latex, so opening the can the right way is an important first step before you ever pick up a brush or sprayer.

The short video below walks through exactly how to open and reseal a DiamondFinish Clear can without damaging the lid or the seal, plus how to use KBS Paint Saver to keep leftover clear coat fresh in the original can.

Why This Matters

KBS Coatings clear coats and paints are moisture-cured urethanes with much stronger adhesion than a typical latex or hardware-store paint. If you pry the lid straight up without first breaking the seal correctly, you risk bending the lid, damaging the seal, or splashing clear coat everywhere.

Steps To Open and Reseal the Can

1. Break the seal evenly. Use a paint can opener or a flat-head screwdriver at several points around the rim rather than prying up on one side only. Prying on just one spot can bend the lid and prevent it from resealing tightly.
2. Keep the rim clean. Wipe any clear coat out of the can's rim groove with a rag before you close the lid again. Dried coating in the groove is what causes lids to stick shut the next time.
3. Preserve what you don't use. Before resealing, spray a light coat of KBS Paint Saver across the surface of the remaining clear coat. It displaces the air inside the can so the leftover DiamondFinish Clear does not skin over or thicken in storage.
4. Reseal and store upright. Tap the lid back on evenly with a rubber mallet or the flat of your hand, then store the can upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
