Clear coating fishing lures and crank baits by dipping is one of the most popular uses for DiamondFinish Clear. Over the past 20+ years, our customers have shared a wealth of storage tips for getting the most out of every container when dip coating lures. Here are the best practices we've collected.
Step 1 — Buy the Right Container Size Purchase the smallest size container of DiamondFinish Clear that matches your volume needs. Some applicators dip thousands of lures daily; others dip a handful. If you expect to use a gallon over the course of a year, purchase four quarts or eight pints rather than a single gallon. Smaller, sealed containers preserve freshness far longer than a large can that's repeatedly opened. |
Step 2 — Divide Into Clean Glass Jars When you receive DiamondFinish Clear, open and stir thoroughly, then divide into clean glass jars. Use KBS Paint Saver in each jar and place painter's plastic between the glass jar and the lid before sealing. Glass is preferred because DiamondFinish Clear will not react with or adhere to glass the way it can with some plastics. |
Step 3 — Minimize Lid-Off Time DiamondFinish Clear is a moisture-cured urethane — not a traditional household enamel or latex paint. It cures by reacting with moisture that is always present in the air, and that process begins the moment the lid is removed. Always replace the lid as quickly as possible after each use. |
⚠ Important The higher the ambient humidity, the faster DiamondFinish Clear will cure inside an open container. In humid climates or during summer months, be especially diligent about minimizing air exposure. |
Step 4 — Re-Thin as Needed As DiamondFinish Clear ages in the container, it may begin to thicken. Add KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene to bring it back to a normal dipping consistency. This can typically be done several times, which is usually sufficient to work through an entire container. |
Step 5 — Use KBS Paint Saver KBS Paint Saver contains inert gases that are heavier than air and 100% moisture-free. Spray it into the container before sealing — the gas settles on top of the coating and displaces any moist, humid air that would otherwise trigger premature curing inside the can. Use it every time you reseal a container. |
★ Pro Tip Use KBS Paint Saver in every glass jar after each dipping session — not just when you first divide the coating. Consistent use each time you reseal dramatically extends the usable life of each jar. |
Step 6 — Use Painter's Plastic Under the Lid Place a layer of painter's plastic between the container and the lid before sealing. This creates a tighter seal and — critically — prevents the lid from bonding to the container over time as the coating cures around the threads or rim. |
Step 7 — Store in a Cool, Dry Location Always store containers of DiamondFinish Clear in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing in a garage — garages routinely reach high temperatures during summer months, which accelerates degradation and in-can curing. |
