Storage Tips For DiamondFinish Clear When Dipping Lures

Clear coating fishing lures and crank baits by dipping is an extremely common application for DiamondFinish Clear. Over the past 20+ years, we have been given quite a few storage tips when using DiamondFinish Clear to dip fishing lures.

  1. Purchase the smallest size container of DiamondFinish Clear that you need for the amount of fishing lures you clear coat by dipping. There are some who dip thousands of fishing lures daily and some dip a handful. If you determine you may use a gallon of DiamondFinish Clear over the course of a year, purchase four quarts or eight pints versus one gallon.

  2. Utilize clean glass jars for DiamondFinish Clear storage. When you receive DiamondFinish Clear, open and stir well and then divide up into clean glass jars. Use KBS Paint Saver in each of the glass jars and use painter’s plastic in between the glass jar and the lid.

  3. DiamondFinish Clear is a moisture-cured urethane and NOT a traditional household enamel or latex paint. DiamondFinish Clear cures when it is exposed to the moisture that is always present in the air and this is by design creating a strong, durable finish. Always minimize the length of time the lid is off the container of DiamondFinish Clear knowing that DiamondFinish Clear is curing during the exposure to the air.

  4. As DiamondFinish Clear ages in the container, it may start to thicken. Add KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene to DiamondFinish Clear to bring it back to normal consistency. Usually, this can be done a few times which is all that typically is needed to consume the entire container of DiamondFinish Clear.

  5. Use KBS Paint Saver. DiamondFinish Clear is a moisture-cured coating meaning that it cures by reacting with water vapor in the air. The higher the humidity, the quicker the cure time. KBS Paint Saver contains inert gases which are heavier than air and 100% dry (no moisture). KBS Paint Saver is sprayed into the container of DiamondFinish Clear which displaces the atmospheric air so no moist, humid air is left in the can that could cause DiamondFinish Clear to prematurely cure and harden.

  6. Use Painter’s Plastic between the container and the lid to create a tight seal and prevent the lid from adhering to the container.

  7. Always store the containers of DiamondFinish Clear in a cool, dry place. Do not store in a garage which typically sees warm temperatures during the summer months.
