Can XTC Clear Be Applied Over Motor Coater?

No. XTC and Motor Coater are two different paint chemistries built for surfaces that operate in very different temperature ranges, and they are not designed to be applied one over the other.

Why they don't mix: Motor Coater is a ceramic-resin engine enamel rated to 500°F, formulated for engine blocks, transmissions, and other underhood components. XTC is a silicone resin-based coating engineered for continuous service from 500°F up to 1500°F, built for headers, exhaust manifolds, and exhaust pipes. Different resin systems, different temperature jobs. Layering one over the other isn't a supported application.

Motor Coater vs. XTC: Different Coatings for Different Heat Zones

It's an easy mix-up because both products live under the hood, but they're built to solve different problems. Motor Coater is a high-gloss, self-leveling engine enamel designed for engine blocks, calipers, and underhood components that see temperatures up to 500°F. XTC is a silicone resin-based coating designed for the much hotter surfaces further down the exhaust path, holding up to continuous temperatures from 500°F to 1500°F.

Note for body shops: XTC is a silicone resin coating, worth calling out plainly since silicone is a familiar red flag around a paint booth. The fisheye risk shops watch for comes from free, uncured silicone, oils, mold releases, lubricants, and detailing sprays that transfer onto a panel before paint goes on. A fully cured, crosslinked silicone resin coating like XTC is a different situation than loose silicone contamination.

If your surface runs hotter than 500°F, such as headers, manifolds, or exhaust pipes, XTC is the correct product on its own. It isn't meant to be paired with Motor Coater as a clear topcoat.

Does Motor Coater Need a Clear Coat to Look Glossy?

No. Every Motor Coater color is glossy right out of the can, with one exception: Velvet Black, which is a matte finish. You do not need to add any clear coat to get a high-gloss, show-quality finish on the other 40+ Motor Coater colors.

Pro Tip: If you want more depth of gloss or added durability on top of Motor Coater, let the Motor Coater cure for at least 7 days first, then apply DiamondFinish Clear. It's rated to 300°F, more than enough for a water-cooled engine.

Adding Depth of Gloss to Motor Coater the Right Way

If you still want to clear coat Motor Coater purely for extra depth or protection, the compatible product is DiamondFinish Clear, not XTC. Here's how:
