Rust Protection Using Clear Coat While Keeping a Rust Patina Look
Patina is a thin layer that forms on the surface of metal, wood, leather, and other materials, giving an aged, weathered appearance. It develops naturally through age, sun exposure, moisture, and wear — or it can be created artificially using chemicals, specialty coatings, and abrasion. Rust is one of the most sought-after patina looks, but left unsealed it will eventually eat through metal entirely. When customers want to preserve the look of rusted metal while stopping rust from progressing, we recommend DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear.
Rust Protection Using Clear Coat
To stop rust, metal must be separated from oxygen and moisture. DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear form a durable, impervious barrier over rust that blocks moisture and oxygen from reaching the metal beneath. The rust patina look remains — but the rust stops progressing.
Preserving Rust Patina with Clear Coat
Rust patina can be fragile. Because rust is often powdery or flaky, it is vulnerable to damage from impacts and abrasion. A clear coat provides a hard, durable protective shell that holds the patina in place. Sealing rust also keeps it from rubbing off onto clothing and other surfaces.
Pro Tip Sealing rust with a clear coat also protects against handling — rust that's not sealed can transfer onto clothing, tools, and anything else that contacts the surface. |
Enhancing Rust Patina with Clear Coat
A clear coat does more than protect — it enhances. Applying DiamondFinish Clear or KBS MAXX Clear over rust brings out richness in the rust colors, adds depth and luster, and gives the surface a beautiful wet look with darker tone and contrast.
Protecting Metal Sheets from Rust While Preserving Patina Rust
A customer told us about a wall he built in his basement using steel sheets with natural rust patina. He wanted to seal the surface — keep the look, stop the rust. For this project, we recommended DiamondFinish Clear.

Application Steps
Step 1 — Remove Loose Rust Flakes Use a wire brush to remove rust that is flaking or falling off the surface. You do not need to be aggressive — just clear away loose material so the clear coat has a solid surface to bond to. |
Step 2 — Clean the Surface Mix KBS Klean with warm water in a 1:1 ratio. Scrub the surface with a cloth, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. |
Step 3 — Dry the Surface Completely Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Force drying is strongly recommended — rust surfaces are porous and can trap moisture that will interfere with adhesion and long-term protection. |
Step 4 — Apply a Minimum of Three Coats Apply at least three coats of DiamondFinish Clear or KBS MAXX Clear. The number of coats needed depends on how coarse the rust is — all peaks and valleys in the surface profile must be fully sealed to prevent rust from spreading over time. |
Special Tip — Sealing Bare Metal Too DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear can also be applied over non-rusted bare metal to prevent rust from forming in the first place. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best clear coat for sealing rust patina? DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear are both excellent options. DiamondFinish Clear is a 1K moisture-cured coating — no mixing required, suitable for any skill level. KBS MAXX Clear is a 2K polyurethane with greater impact and weather resistance, ideal for demanding outdoor applications. Both are UV stable, crystal clear, and will not yellow. |
Will clear coat change the look of my rust patina? A clear coat enhances rust patina rather than hiding it. It brings out the richness and depth of rust colors, adds luster, and gives the surface a beautiful wet look with darker tone and contrast. The aged appearance is preserved and improved. |
Do I need to remove all rust before applying clear coat? No. You only need to remove loose, flaking rust with a wire brush. The goal is to preserve the patina look while sealing the surface. You do not need to strip the metal back to bare metal. |
How many coats of clear coat do I need over rust? Apply a minimum of three coats. Because rust is porous and uneven, additional coats may be needed to seal all peaks and valleys in the surface profile and ensure long-term protection. Apply enough coats so the entire surface is thoroughly sealed. |
Can clear coat protect non-rusted bare metal from rusting? Yes. DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear can be applied directly over bare, non-rusted metal to seal it and prevent rust from forming by blocking moisture and oxygen. |
