When repairing my trunk, when do I apply a seam sealer?

When doing a trunk restoration, applying seam sealer to the seams creates a clean, finished look. The critical step is ensuring the seams are properly prepped and protected with RustSeal before the seam sealer goes on. Applying seam sealer directly to bare metal leaves the seam vulnerable to rust forming underneath — defeating the purpose of the repair.

Using the KBS Trunk and Floorpan Repair Kit, follow this sequence for best results:

  • Prep all surfaces using the included prep products.
  • Apply RustSeal to all surfaces, including the seams.
  • Wait until the final coat of RustSeal is dry to the touch and leaves no fingerprint — typically 3 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
  • Apply seam sealer at this stage for excellent adhesion and long-lasting rust protection.
